Princess and the pea

Few things come down to personal preference more than mattresses. What feels like a cloud to one person can be back pain in the making for another. However, choosing the right mattress from the sheer range of options can be mind boggling. Navigating stores and websites, debating between foam and springs, and determining how much to spend – mattresses can cost anything from a few hundred euros to thousands – can leave you feeling like you need a nap!

Unfortunately there is no one “right” material to choose, things in life are never that easy! However, choosing the best mattress can be made easier when looking at a few areas.

In general side sleepers need a softer mattress, one that will support body weight, and conform to their shape. The last thing a stomach-sleeper probably wants is an enveloping memory foam mattress – it would feel smothering! Instead, a firmer bed will provide the best support. Consider a firm foam or dense innerspring mattress. If you sleep on your back you’ll want something in the middle – a surface that supports, but has some give so your spine is kept in healthy alignment.

Here in Portugal we have 300 days of sunshine a year, which is fantastic, but if you get hot at night it is not so good. Foam or latex mattresses can hold in body heat, especially if they’re very soft and a lot of your body sinks in. Newer technology does help to alleviate this issue, however we recommend to accessorize your bed with toppers and sheets that offer cooling benefits.

If you have allergies, foam and latex options are antimicrobial and resistant to dust mites and mould. If you have back pain memory foam and/or latex is best as it moulds to your body for support.

If you can’t decide what matters most some savvy manufacturers make a hybrid-style mattress that combines the buoyancy of an innerspring core with the motion isolation of memory foam. It’s a best-of-both-worlds option that can satisfy many partner disputes and sleeping styles.
