Pocket sprung mattresses have been king in the mattress world for over 100 years, but as new materials come along and try topple its crown – none more so than memory foam – which is best for a great night’s sleep?
These are filled with individual springs housed in separate fabric pockets. Each spring moves independently so there is more bounce, support and the feeling of being “on top” of the mattress.
As the springs are individual, moving on one side of the mattress is less likely to make the other move, fantastic news if your sleeping partner is a fidgeter.
You have a larger choice when it comes to firmness and feel. The number of springs determines the firmness of the mattress. The higher the number, the firmer the mattress.
These ensure you maintain correct posture during the night, they are more breathable than memory foam, offer a cooler night’s sleep and the level of comfort is considered very high.
A common criticism is the way they respond to pressure. They pushback against your body’s pressure, but our bodies don’t apply the same amount of pressure evenly across the mattress. The areas that press down the hardest – chest, hips and head – will get more pushback. This can be uncomfortable, and problematic for those with back or joint issues.
They do require flipping/rotating to maintain their longevity, the fillings can make them heavy to turn and they don’t tend to last as long as memory foam mattresses.
Memory foam is a high-density viscoelastic polyurethane foam. It reacts to body heat and moulds to the contours of your body.
By moulding to your body shape, these evenly distribute your weight, cushion your joints, relieve pressure points, soothe aches and offer support for all body types.
It is better at shock absorbing. If you share a bed with a restless sleeper memory foam ensures you won’t get woken up every time they move.
There is no need to flip them, they are thought to be longer lasting than sprung mattresses and they are hypoallergenic and don’t collect dust.
For those living in warmer climates memory foam could be a poor choice due to its potential for heat retention. However many come with a “cooling” gel layer to alleviate this issue.
You can experience a ‘sinking’ feeling because of how it moulds to your shape and if you like to change position during the night this may not be the best choice.
It is heavy so is not the easiest to move and can be quite expensive.
Which is best?
Heat. If you tend to be hot during the night, memory foam may exacerbate this.Movement. If you like to move a lot, a pocket sprung mattress will be better.Fidgeting.
